For two years, security guard Ben has tried to convince James, a veteran cop, that he is worthy of James' sister, Angela. When Ben is finally accepted into the police academy, James decides to test his mettle by inviting him along on a shift deliberately designed to scare the trainee. However, events take an unexpected turn when their wild night leads to Atlanta's most-notorious criminal and Ben's rapid-fire mouth proves as dangerous as the bullets whizzing by them.

Critics Consensus

Kevin Hart's livewire presence gives Ride Along a shot of necessary energy, but it isn't enough to rescue this would-be comedy from the buddy-cop doldrums.

Nothing in the movie makes sense, but I prefer to think that "Ride Along" is just a badly told joke, rather than an insult to its audience.

It's a typically absurd, exaggerated spiel but with a grim undertone that resonates later on, so that Ben's desperate efforts to make something of himself seem not entirely a laughing matter.

An action-comedy short on both action and comedy, this turgid dirge recycles all the usual mismatched cop-couple cliches (from 48 Hours to Cop Out) with dreary results.

In a way, it's almost too easy because "Ride Along" becomes entirely too cliche and predictable to really appreciate. It's in one ear and out the other.

Ride Along plays out like the buddy action comedy that Ice Cube and Chris Tucker never made outside of the Friday franchise. Instead of Tucker, though, Ice Cube is paired with the equally excitable loudmouth Kevin Hart.

Standard-format American cop comedy, where an intractable veteran (Ice Cube) is forced to suffer a day on the job in the company of his distractable brother-in-law-to-be (Kevin Hart).

The buddy cop genre has been done better. Ice Cube is even better in 21 Jump Street as the same role. Same dynamic for an hour forty.

I really enjoyed the light and entertaining humor. Ice Cube and Kevin Hart feed off each other like a dream and it's just a cop story that you hear often, but in a super fresh and fun way.

I went into Ride Along (2014) hoping for a fun, energetic buddy comedy, but it ends up feeling tired and predictable. The humor leans heavily on loud, over-the-top moments instead of clever writing, and most of the jokes miss the mark. The chemistry between the leads should carry the film, but it feels forced rather than natural. Instead of building genuine comedic tension, the movie relies on repetitive gags that quickly wear thin. The story itself is very formulaic, offering nothing new or interesting. It follows a familiar path without adding any fresh twists or memorable moments. Overall, Ride Along feels like a missed opportunity. It had potential but settles for being noisy instead of funny. Gave it a 2/10.

this movie is a comedic masterpeice the way Tim Story blends sadness, revenge, comedy, and a heartwarming turn when two sides come together to save the people they love.
