The songs of Journey, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and other artists underscore a tale of big dreams in Hollywood. Soon after hopping off a bus from the Midwest, aspiring singer Sherrie Christian immediately finds herself in trouble. Coming to her rescue is Drew, a bar-back at the legendary club the Bourbon Room. With stars in their eyes, the young lovers chase their dreams, but a misunderstanding involving rock god Stacee Jaxx threatens to tear them apart.

Critics Consensus

Its exuberant silliness is almost enough to make up for its utter inconsequentiality, but Rock of Ages is ultimately too bland and overlong to justify its trip to the big screen.

Really, it's like a longer, louder version of Glee or American Idol, but with actors who can't sing rather than singers who can't act. Plus, it rocks you like a hurricane.

Rock of Ages will make you want to raise your arms...and then immediately plunge your fingers into your eyeballs for salvation (you can go back for seconds to rescue your ears).

It's easy to see how Rock of Ages became a crowd-pleaser on Broadway, where audiences got caught up in the energy of '80s hit songs performed live.

Not a big fan of this one, but was very entertained and taken back to my youth with all the rock music featured by JOURNEY, FOREIGNER, PAT BENATAR, TWISTED SISTER, REO SPEEDWAGON and others. Rock on dudes and catch this one on Netflix….!!!!

The best musicals are those with songs that develop naturally within a story instead of obligatorily filling every moment with yet another song. This is not one of them.

An abundance of energy makes up for the unconvincing lip-syncing and spontaneous song-and-dance sequences that aren't as smoothly integrated into character actions.

The music helps a lot to the movie. The direction is off, at a times the actors seems over the top, and isn’t clear of this is serious or not. I believe that is not, but sometimes it looks like they beginning to take it seriously and there’s when the movie became cheesy.

I am so sorry but this movie is so good for those who have not watched it if you’re in the 80s rock band hair bands music is a must see for rockers in the 80s and 90s maybe!

I'm confident to say that this is one of the worst movies I ever saw! XD I really am amazed how they could manage that since there are some very good actors in the cast and I dare say they are the worst characters. Not to mention how they castrated those poor songs. I just wanted to see something funny but when I first laid eyes on Alec Baldwin (no clue what was yet to come with him...) I knew this will be a pain to watch and when 'I wanna know what love is' started to play I cried out loud in embarassment XD I will always love Tom Cruise and would definitely pour some sugar on him but this movie was sooooo ridiculous!

For those who dissed this, they're missing the point... One of Tom Cruise's best OTT performances (on a par with Tropic Thunder...yes, he was in that) and entertaining throughout if you're an 80's rock fan (and a bit before as well). Main characters were a bit light but highlight for me was Catherine Zeta jones channeling Pat Benatar with a few Michael Jackson thriller moves mixed in, awesome! So bad it's good and a useful escape from reality. Worth a watch.
