Critics Consensus

It's noticeably subject to the law of diminishing returns, but Rocky III still has enough brawny spectacle to stand in the ring with the franchise's better entries.

That humor, along with a shaky alliance built between Balboa and his former nemesis, Apollo Creed, propels Rocky III to a satisfying, if unsurprising, conclusion.

Smart movie-making this—your adrenaline is pumping before a line of dialogue's been uttered.

Stallone should have skipped Rocky III and gone directly to Rocky IV.

Rocky III looks good—a lean film with a bit of muscle. Stallone makes it eminently watchable. And that's probably more than we should have expected.

A Rocky picture without Rocky, and when audiences respond to it, they won't be responding to the character on the screen. They'll be responding to the noise and the quick cuts and their own racial fears. And, mostly, they'll be responding to a memory.

Still not full-on farce, but getting there, is it worth watching for fans? As the Italian Stallion himself would say, absolutely.

A marginal improvement over its predecessor due to the embraced maturity and given strength that pushes the fighter’s own confrontation under appreciative portrait dynamically fulfilled, standing in the franchise’s ring as one of the most enjoyable as well emotional on the same level. (B+)

I enjoyed the movie; it was entertaining and engaging, featuring a story with some touching moments. It follows the journey of the "Underdog" character as he achieves his dream, proves his worth, and gains fame—transitioning from a quiet, stable life to becoming somewhat reckless and arrogant. Ultimately, the character suffers a setback and returns to his true self. The line "There Is No Tomorrow" was a powerful, pivotal moment in the film, and the famous song "Eye of the Tiger" was moving and beautiful. However, I felt the pacing dragged a bit at times, and I prefer the two previous installments.
