In this quartet of neo-noir tales, a mysterious salesman (Josh Hartnett) narrates a tragic story of co-dependency, while a musclebound vigilante (Mickey Rourke) tears his way through the criminal underworld in search of his lost love (Jaime King). In another part of the city, a grizzled cop (Bruce Willis) foils the ambitions of a child-killer (Nick Stahl), and an ex-prostitute (Brittany Murphy) evades her ex-pimp (Benicio del Toro) with the help of her new boyfriend, Dwight (Clive Owen).

Rodriguez and Miller bring the latter's pulpy source material to stunning life, with pops of colour to complement the stark black and white cinematography. The Noir-inspired content means plenty of gender stereotypes, but Willis and Rourke shine.

Sin City is excellent because its visual style is so bold and memorable. The black-and-white imagery, splashes of color, harsh shadows, and comic-panel framing make it feel like a graphic novel brought to life rather than a standard crime movie. The anthology structure gives the film a pulpy noir rhythm. Each story has its own flavor, but they all belong to the same rotten city of crooked cops, doomed women, brutal violence, corruption, narration, and damaged antiheroes. Mickey Rourke is outstanding as Marv, giving the movie its best emotional weight. He makes Marv brutal, tragic, ugly, loyal, and strangely noble. The style can be so heightened that some characters feel more like noir icons than real people, but that is also part of the design. Sin City is violent, stylish, hard-boiled, and one of the most visually distinctive comic-book films.
