Several years after they parted ways, a woman (Alice Eve) receives a surprise visit from her former lover (Stanley Tucci), who arrives with suitcase in tow and the news that he has left his wife.

Critics Consensus

Some Velvet Morning marks writer-director Neil LaBute's welcome return to the mode of challenging chamber piece, but this misanthropic two-hander is too slight to produce the same bite as the filmmakers' best works.

The look of Some Velvet Morning remains clean and flat, the decor [is] mostly hotel-room neutral. The major visual idea is to have Eve's red dress and lipstick stand out against a monochromatic backdrop: effective in itself, but not enough.

With Some Velvet Morning, LaBute returns to the provocative style that made his name.

Though LaBute wrote this for the screen, I mistakenly decided that it must have originated onstage... because the oblique, heavily freighted dialogue seems too elegant and artful for a medium dominated by hacks.

This dark and dismal psychological exercise features two winning performances in a film that warrants excited discussion after its closing frames.

Some final contextual cues hint that we shouldn't be so sure and suggest that Labute has something to say about ends justifying means.

Sad that they don't offer Alive Eve the roles she deserves.

Tedious and awkward to watch. The endless dialogue between two characters never surprised me even when the movie came to an end. The movie was pointless.

Drags on and on. Not sure if I was relieved or annoyed about the true ending.

Perfect acting! Some movies are left to be unseen by everyone because of the too complicated conversations and the slow development of the story. But if you are connoisseur you will like the movie.

I saw this on the airplane as a Tribeca Film Festival selection, having never heard of it. I found it powerful, disturbing, intriguing and thought-provoking. I understand the criticisms, but disagree with them. I've already recommended it to friends - with the caveat that it is not for everyone.
