Critics Consensus

Mildly diverting at best, Something in the Water leaves viewers adrift in a choppy sea of familiar genre beats and underwhelming scares.

Still, it’s a mostly fun late-summer film, would likely go down easy with a drinking game.

The female-first vibe is refreshing but Something In The Water is something old, nothing new, a lot that is borrowed and an eyeful of twinkly blue.

Something in the Water is competently filmed, with lots of propulsive underwater shark’s eye shots of the flailing legs of the bridesmaids. But there’s rather too much time spent watching the girls bobbing and bickering in the middle of the ocean.

On the downside, the central couple's issues seem bolted on from another story, the dialogue is often unconvincing and the low-budget sharks are very, very silly.

Ominous music, underwater shots of legs flailing, and drone footage of the requisite fin do well to create tension in this generic shark attack horror.

If you want to have fun for just under an hour and a half (there was no reason for it to last longer than that), there are worse options on streaming platforms. [Full review in Spanish].

Very predictable movie. I knew who wasn't going to end up at the end right away. Character development isn't great so you do not get invested in any of the characters. The makeup was crazy work because it looked like they put a hot pink marker on the south asian's face to make her look sunburnt like the rest of the girls, which was odd. You really don't get to see any shark attacks. If you're looking for a shark movie, this isn't it. If you're looking for a movie about some girls before a wedding, ok. I'm giving it 2 stars because I feel bad for the actresses that had to kick around in the water so long while playing out a pretty boring storyline. I think that the actresses did the best they could with what they were given...

I could tell this was a woke female director about 30 seconds into the film.

awful, cringy, unoriginal, boring. whole thing feels staged for disaster. Worst group of terrible friends, stupid characters, terrible acting, vomit inducing overacting. anticlimatic. awful shark animation and unreal attack scenes. even the sharks dont know what the hell they are or meant to be doing. at the end even the coastguard is totally off character and is a side extra. the sharks seem to deliberately put enough effort and aim into playing to the directors hands. starts of looking like a graphical horror, ends up being a bunch of softies (the sharks). Jaws the original is far superior to this piece of ****

I watched as much as I could… had to switch off. What a load of rubbish. Stupid young women. I don’t believe anyone would be so dumb to get themselves in that ridiculous situation… absolute tosh!
