This rather mushy combination of animation and live-action remains one of Disney's most controversial efforts. Go to Full Review

Apparently the Disney wonder-workers are just a lot of conventional hacks when it comes to telling a story with actors instead of cartoons. Go to Full Review

Better save this for nostalgia only -- kids won't be missing anything if they never encounter this relic. Go to Full Review

Full of Disney charm – but sadly weighted down with problematic racial stereotypes and tropes – it serves more as a look at Disney history than the family film it was meant to be. Go to Full Review

Insidiously racist, pulling from minstrelsy and depicting recently freed Black slaves as kindly old Magical Negroes. I got the shivers watching the film... Go to Full Review

Nothing about the film is particularly famous (save for the often debated subject matter), though the unforgettable song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" has miraculously survived. Go to Full Review

Kevin P @RT55971421 6 hrs ago The black sheep of Disney and easily their most controversial movie ever made. Unintentionally racist with its insidious depiction of black plantation servitude and poor living conditions as a sugarcoated romanticized paradise. It's a shame since there are some really impressive elements in this thanks to the sheer talent of classic Disney, such as the incredibly catchy southern jazz soundtrack and musical numbers, the great blending of animation and live action, the colorful fluid energy of the animated segments that have really good comedic timing, and half of the performances. Most of white actors are extremely boring. But all of the African American actors are really charismatic and try to elevate their racially stereotypical characters. The movie is less hateful, but far more cluelessly condescending and romanticized of black servitude. Overall, the movie is a fascinating mixed bag of genuine Disney talent being tragically misguided by naive racially insensitive nostalgia. I can see how some aspects make modern audiences uncomfortable, because we don’t like being reminded of the old interracial dynamics. But this is a very good film. The performances, morals, and soul of this film are just incredible, not to mention such an early attempt at weaving live action and animation. If it offends your sensibilities that is understandable, but it remains a profound cultural artifact and heart warming kids movie. 4/5 highly recommend.
