Jens B @Jens97 4d The ancient Egyptian setting, the costumes, the score, the set design and of course Kurt Russell give "Stargate" huge potential, which is never fully exploited - typical of films by Roland Emmerich. The predictable script, the slow pace, the unspeakable romance and some rather poorly aged visual effects do quite a bit of damage to the sci-fi desert adventure. And whoever came up with the idea of ​​making James Spader – a man with the charisma of a limp slice of white bread – the main character should be fired from the Stargate. And if this had been based on some outside source, rather than written for the screen, I feel like there would've been a lot more lore and backstory on the aliens. As it is, it's a perfectly fine, maybe slightly subpar 90s sci-fi action adventure movie. Kurt Russell in particular really bringing that 90s cheese. I'd still say it was an entertaining diversion. The language/linguistics part of the script is pretty silly though. The whole movie is plainly far-fetched, but that's the one part where they're trying to bring some realism and credibility into it, and it doesn't land at all. I don't buy that the language came together that easily. Arrival did this so much better, on every level, but especially its handling of linguistics. The movie is a must watch and essential before starting something even better than this movie the TV show, Stargate SG1 followed by Stargate Atlantis and then Stargate Universe.
