As society recedes in the spring of 2020, film director Paul Berger returns to his childhood home in the provincial Chevreuse Valley. Paul hunkers down with his girlfriend Morgane, his brother Etienne, and Etienne's new girlfriend Carole, but the makeshift household finds new ways to lacerate familiar wounds in this neurotic comedy from master filmmaker Olivier Assayas.

Calling the spring and summer of 2020 “a utopia,” as Paul does, may be a bit much, but Mr. Assayas has crafted a beautiful and moving tableau of how one small group dealt with a bewildering change.

There aren’t great depths of insight to be mined here, but the film is affable and playful enough to entertain while also nagging us to think back on our own experiences during the pandemic, when things may not have been so sun-dappled and easygoing.
