Joaquin U @Joaquin1 Aug 19 Somewhat entertaining, but most of the praise seems tied to Barbeau’s revealing outfits—or lack thereof. That’s fine, but the rest is pure cringe. It plays like an episode of The Incredible Hulk stripped of both the incredible and the Hulk. Nostalgia clearly props up its star ratings. The cast is odd and mostly subpar, with terrible acting across the board. The script is dumb, the direction should’ve ended Craven’s career, and the dated effects, awful makeup, and cheap costumes turn this comic book adaptation into a disgrace. Still, there’s a bit of absurd ’80s charm, and Jourdan’s sophisticated villain adds a touch of fun, but this is strictly late‑night, insomniac viewing. Wes Craven never disappoints See more Dallas H @FozzieMcFly Jul 19 Swamp Thing is one of my favorite comic book characters from the lower tiers of the DC Comics universe that most people do not immediately think of when recalling major characters from the publisher. Jonah Hex is another one of my alternate characters from them, too. I love that Wes Craven made an honest attempt to write and direct a movie adaptation of the southern charmer of a villain. However, the movie is too brightly lit rather than dark and gloomy. It also uses Star Wars editing transitions, since the movie was produced during the heyday of the original sci-fi trilogy. My only wish would be that Wes Craven had approached this movie with a darker, more twisted tone, similar to his approach to The Hills Have Eyes (1977) or The Last House on the Left (1972). Something new that I did not realize until this recent viewing of the movie is that it was co-produced by Michael Uslan, who has produced all of the Batman movies since the first Tim Burton movie in the late '80s. Wes Craven's treatment of the comic is excellent, especially given the time of it's release, it is a truly unique film. I love Adrienne Barbeau in it too, she is so sexy. The FX might be a bit silly looking, but it is a really fun movie and keeps the pace going so it never gets boring. World building is excellent considering the relatively low budget. When evil scientists, Arcane, attacks the lab for his notes, Holland becomes Swamp Thing and looks to save Cable with the missing notebook. The story was alright, but Swamp Thing looks terrible. See more Stephen O. @DonSevo Nov 27 This is a good movie, not great. The scenes were well performed , even if they were a poorly tied together. I feel like Swamp Thing could have been a lot more scary. You almost couldn’t believe that Cable was scared of him. We won’t even discuss the futility of the last 15 minutes, and the terrible costume of Arcane. Worth a watch, but you’ll forget about it. See more Read all reviews
