This tale of child abuse and and its deep psychological scars, based on a true story, follows Sybil (Sally Field), an introverted student living alone in New York City who suffers from multiple personality disorder. Haunted by nightmares of her past, Sybil starts seeing a psychiatrist named Dr. Cornelia B. Wilbur (Joanne Woodward). When Dr. Wilbur discovers Sybil has over a dozen different personalities, she becomes obsessed with uncovering her patient's tortured childhood in order to heal her.

William S 21h This book and movie have been discredited as a fiction, created by a sadistic therapist and a highly suggestible client. An investigative journalist who researched the case years after the therapist and client had died, found no evidence to support the trauma nor the diagnosis. Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case. The cultural popularity of this book and movie has led to years of mis-diagnosis and maltreatment of people with psychological problems.
