Critics Consensus

The Next Generation has the fortune of starring early-career Matthew McConaughey and Renée Zellweger, but it services neither headliner well in a convoluted and cheap-looking slasher that doesn't live up to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre legacy.

It's puerile, disgusting, sexist, stupid and boring.

Largely terrible, with the kernel of something interesting in the film's final scenes.

Though Henkel's script broadly apes memorable moments from the first film, the echoes only serve to underscore how short he's coming up here.

The script is clunky and awkward, there's little beyond predictable stereotypes in the plot, and the "terror" itself isn't even that terrifying in comparison to its predecessors.

worst of all has to be McConaughey, who hoots and howls his way through the mid-film torture of Zellweger with such brio that it becomes something like misogynistic performance art.

While not technically a good movie, the (un?)intentional comedy and parodying of the franchise make this fourth entry an admittedly entertaining (and hilarious) watch.

A terrible film with the worst portrayal of Leatherface I've ever seen. Leatherface in this film can be wrapped up in two words Whiney-Bitch. The plot devolves more and more the further it chugs along and by the end turns into a nonsensical mess. People give the 2017 "Leatherface" film a lot of grief but I'll take that over this monstrosity any day of the calender year.

How can you make a Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie where Leatherface barely feels like a main character and the chainsaw barely feels like a central part of the horror?
