Critics Consensus

Impeccably scripted, beautifully directed, and filled with fine performances, The Social Network is a riveting, ambitious example of modern filmmaking at its finest.

In its cold, almost forensic way, this is as tense and exciting as it is absorbing. It's a miracle, really.

Fincher does, at least, make decent entertainment out of such inherently unprepossessing subjects as computer use and legal hearings.

The words out of the Sorkin’s script and from the actors’ mouths are so powerful and hypnotic. Every time I watch this I discover something new, this time was Dakota Johnson.

This is the monumental, undeniable biopic that so many have tried to replicate & never get close. The writing/directing team of Fincher & Sorkin is so astonishingly assured that every genre pitfall is thrown out & replaced with a magnetic energy that I can literally feel in my stomach. I have never witnessed a score & editing work so effectively to perfectly blend tones. The dialogue hits so many emotional beats of betrayal, excitement, arrogance, & loneliness fueled by some top notch performances. I have a few nitpicks but they are forgotten quickly as the merging of courtroom drama, tech startup tension, & college parties make something far more compelling than I thought possible.

The acting performances are great, but at the end of the movie it doesn't feel as consequential as all the build-up made it seem. Eisenberg in particular sells his character with a lot of lack of charm and an undeniable sense of genius. The movie does do a very determined job of pushing the PG-13 boundaries as far as it can take them.

One of the dullest movies I've ever sat through. I get that creating a website, even one that became as revolutionary as Facebook, isn't necessarily an entertaining story, but I'd much rather be watching one that is.
