THE ADULTS follows Eric (Michael Cera) as he returns home for a short visit and finds himself caught between reuniting with his sisters and chasing a victory with his old poker group. As the trip extends, Eric finds it increasingly difficult to avoid confrontations and revelations as his carefully constructed façade of his adulthood gives way to old childhood conflicts. While Maggie (Sophia Lillis) attempts to recreate the intimate world the three of them once shared, Eric and Rachel (Hannah Gross) are faced with the divide between their childhood selves and the adults they are now.

Critics Consensus

The Adults finds enough profundity in grief and strained sibling bonds to overcome an occasionally aimless story, with subtly rewarding results.

While The Adults lurches from amusing to cringeworthy in tone, it successfully zeroes in on the raw emotions that both bind and separate this quirky trio that can’t seem to harmonize again.

A sad but affecting character study that has nothing like a plot but instead ruminates on loss, distrust and misunderstanding within a fraying family.

The Adults was one of the best surprises of 2023: an indie-spirited film somehow sponsored by a studio, with three of the best performances of the year.

The Adults is a comedy-drama that doesn’t seem to deliver much of either, and that gray, in-between state just isn’t appealing anymore.

The performances are all distinctly sad and believable, and Cera expertly channels his onscreen neuroses into a suspiciously over-controlled, serious-man façade.

Slow, boring, odd and neither funny nor dramatic. Abandoned it after 20 minutes.
