Winter 1862. In the midst of the Civil War, the US Army sends a company of volunteer soldiers to the western territories, with the task of patrolling the unchartered borderlands. As their mission ultimately changes course, the meaning behind their engagement begins to elude them.

In his latest, Minervini brings viewers into the thick of the Civil War, only to find the same dazed souls and gnawing uncertainties that have always been his focus. It’s a war film with very little combat, but it’s about a war that still rages today.

Miniervi’s near-total eschewing of conventional dramatic or character development may leave others feeling as isolated and cold as the soldiers on the screen.

At a brisk run time of just under 90 minutes, “The Damned” makes at least a darned strong impression.

Minervini’s lovely, pensive odyssey has some fascinating moments... But with all the downtime, the film ends up feeling a little empty, and again, that attentional void encourages stray thinking.

Documentarian Roberto Minervini steps into the fictional narrative sector with Civil War drama The Damned by pretty much setting up an historical reenactment and shooting it like a documentary.

This movie is not what you think of when you imagine the American sprit. It’s slow and boring. When you think of how men fought for liberty in this county you imagine the hell they went through to obtain the freedoms we have now. It’s a foreigners view of the concept of war in the present time not when we were founded. God bless America and the men who fought for this country. This movie sucks.
