November 1975, Paris. The appeal hearing of Jewish far-left activist Pierre Goldman is set to begin. Sentenced to life imprisonment for four armed robberies, one of which resulted in the death of two women, Goldman pleads not guilty to the murder charges. The massively-covered court proceedings transform Goldman into a romantic figure and a hero of the intellectual left, even as the relationship with his young attorney Georges Kiejman frays. Ever the agitator for his ideals, the elusive and mercurial Goldman throws his own trial into chaos, risking a death sentence. The Goldman Case paints a psycho-pathological portrait of a militant revolutionary, but also of a society torn apart by patterns of racism and injustice that are still virulent today.

Despite a few implausible moments, The Goldman Case confirms Kahn’s judgement, on reading Goldman’s memoir, that the man, “a gambler and provocateur, brilliant, ambiguous, manipulative”, was a “cinematic character” – which indeed he is.

We, like those in the courtroom’s audience, are left holding our breaths and clutching our seats. It’s rare for that sort of anticipation to ooze out of a film with authenticity, something The Goldman Case accomplishes with ease.

Even though the beginning is a little slow and maybe there isn't anything that extraordinary about how the movie is shot, "Le procès Goldman" is an increasingly captivating affair boasting good acting, interesting dialogues and potent sociopolitical themes. Overall, Cédric Kahn pulls off the whole courtroom drama thing very well: despite being talky, his film is immersive and not overbearing - and even if the finale isn't as moving as it could perhaps be, it's still a thought-provoking ride.
