Tony W @Neverending80s Oct 21, 2026 The first 45 minutes of the film is great, the mother and son dynamic works extremely well building for the comparisons in behavior that come later. The atmosphere works well to set the mood and being an A24 film I expected to read between the lines and lean into the film and what it was trying to say. It drags towards the end, yet wraps up too quickly, one of the rare times I would’ve liked a horror/ mystery/ thriller to be nearly an hour longer. *Spoilers ahead* Explain why the hole was there and explain some of the Irish/Finnish lore. A strong beginning with great acting that gets a little lazy in the writing department towards the third act. Pacing becomes an issue around the 50 minute mark. If you’d like a quick watch that’s a slow burn, I’d give it a watch. See more Nathan J @TribianiRamoray Oct 8, 2026 Rated: 6.5/10 I queued this to see Lee Cronin’s work before his Evil Dead run. I like this; it leans into paranoid dread over cheap jump scares, despite a familiar premise. The Director's Eye (What Worked): • Kerslake shines with an exhausted performance as a mom doubting her kid. • Sound design makes the sinkhole and woods feel like a breathing threat. • Creepy beats (like Chris eating a spider) build genuine tension. The Friction (What Didn't Click for Me): • The middle drags while Sarah investigates what the audience already figured out. • It relies on standard “creepy kid” tropes without adding much new. The Verdict: I like it. Watch for slow-burn horror. Skip if you need fast pacing. See more Robert P @Superbad Oct 5, 2026 The Hole in the Ground is a *3* star Movie! See more Donny B @DonnyBeano Sep 21, 2026 While this movie has a very interesting premise, the choice to leave out key details involving the most interesting parts of the movie makes it almost unbearable to watch towards the end. One specific example of blatantly lazy writing is when she finds her son in the hole and she is grabbed by one of the creatures and it instantly cuts to the next scene of her running back to the house with her son. HOW DID SHE GET OUT OF THE HOLE?! Terrible writing in a crucial part of the story. Examples and spoilers include: 1. Why didn’t she tell authorities that there was a massive, gaping crater in the ground in her back yard that is constantly sinking? 2. How did she get away from the creatures and out of the hole? 3. Why, after she got her son out of the hole, didn’t she get authorities to come to her house and see that there was a creature that looks exactly like her son locked in her basement? 4. Burning the house down destroys all evidence that would vindicate her and the neighbor lady. See more Dina L @Dinal Aug 20, 2026 First hour was atmospheric and promising: adorable kid, devoted mom, Ireland but dark and bleak. Last half hour was a real letdown, formulaic and not thrilling for a thriller. See more Kevin S @SayHeyKid1230 Aug 13, 2026 So they just forgot to explain the hole? How long has the hole been there? How come nobody in the town has noticed the giant hole? Why didn’t they warn her about the giant hole that swallows kids? See more Read all reviews
