From the first act, it gives off the impression that it’s building toward something suspenseful—a dark, thrilling mystery hidden beneath its eerie tone. Unfortunately, it never lives up to that potential. The movie feels like it’s constantly chasing its own shadow, unsure of what it’s trying to be. There are moments where it looks like the story is about to take off, but instead it collapses under its own lack of direction. The plot holes are glaring, the pacing drags, and the story never manages to stitch itself into anything cohesive. What starts as an interesting premise devolves into a messy, disjointed series of events that fail to lead anywhere meaningful. The screenplay, at its core, is the biggest problem. It feels unfinished—like a first draft that no one ever took the time to refine. The dialogue is flat, the emotional beats don’t land, and there’s a frustrating absence of payoff. Scenes end abruptly, motivations are unclear, and by the time the third act arrives, the audience has already lost interest. But what’s truly disappointing is how much potential The Hunting had. You can see glimpses of what could have been—a strong concept buried beneath poor execution. If the director had taken more time to focus on structure, tone, and character development, this could’ve been a solid thriller. Instead, it feels like a half-baked experiment that never finds its rhythm. The direction doesn’t help much either. The camera work feels random and uninspired, the atmosphere inconsistent. You can tell the director wanted to create tension, but without strong storytelling or pacing, that tension never fully manifests. The film spirals downward after the first act, completely losing any sense of control or purpose. By the end, you’re left with a story that feels empty and unresolved—like watching a puzzle with half its pieces missing. It’s not just disappointing; it’s frustrating, because there’s a clear sense that this could’ve been so much better. The Hunting is a film that devours itself in its own confusion. It starts rough, falls apart midway, and by the third act, it’s hard to even care about what’s happening. It’s not just a weak movie—it’s a missed opportunity. The script doesn't really help at all. On top of all of this the casting is way off. Nobody fits their part and to top it off the music is annoying. So e if the scenery is ok. Very forgettable. A lot of it focuses on the mental toll that trying to solve the murders has on the police chief, and I thought that might lead to something interesting happening. I was wrong. Don’t waste your time. See more 06/13/2022 It kept coming up in my recommendations on Tubi so I figured I'd watch it to get it over with. Acting was 80/20. It wasn't too generic for low budget. I could have been okay, but as a writer, the "twist" was not a twist. It was just lazy writing. Not one iota of anything that alludes to the existence of the new character they spring out at the end. There are so many good films by unknowns and newbies that hardly get airtime. But then these DIY self-proclaimed filmmakers somehow get a budget and produce films that are mediocre at best. Instead of making an effort they rush things all for sake of uploading so they can label themselves a filmmaker.. the whole quality over quantity thing just escapes them.
