Allie F 02/04/2022 The story of Alan Turing and what others did at Bletchley Park is one that the world should know about. Of course, for cinematic purposes, the narrative heavily leans on a specific storyline that does take artistic license on the actual events that took place historically. The truth is that there were many heroes in the war, and there are still other untold stories of efforts just as valiant. That said, Cumberbatch and Knightly did a great job in conveying some of the complex feelings and emotions that arose from many difficult situations. Despite the departure from some historical details and facts, it's a well-made film. One I've watched multiple times since. It's heartbreaking what Turing had to undergo after what he helped do, and definitely a tear jerker for that reason. Great movie. See more K G @KatyG-S Jun 24 1 wonderful story during the time of WW2. It is some of those times when to put an amazing true story into a movie. Benedict Cumberbatch was tremendous as Alan Turing - the man who solved the enigma code like nobody else could. His voice, very precise for the early 20th century, narrating the life of WW2 with actual footage. Now, what I said was a key - there is the trope of showing & not telling, in addition to the flashbacks being depicted. What is told has a point: according to Alan Turing, violence seemed like fun to humans, which felt wrong as some victim of bullying himself (in those flashbacks). The violent battles were not the main plot. They solved their own battle with an enigma machine. My review was just praise for a story during WW2 not being a story of hiding like Anne Frank but about a small subway to defeat Hitler without weapons. :) See more Faith O @faithopar Jun 16 The limitation game is a nice and beautiful movie where beyond the historical aspect, it really highlights how brilliance is often misunderstood, and how society can fail to appreciate difference. What Worked: Tyldum’s framing of the ticking machine builds crazy tension, and Cumberbatch just vanishes into the role. Through my Methodist faith lens, seeing a man use his God-given intellect to save millions, only to be broken by society, deeply reinforced my values about grace and loving our neighbors. The Cuts: Framing Turing as a lone-wolf erased the team’s massive effort. The forced spy subplot stalled the momentum; it was just spinning its wheels to add drama. Keeping it spoiler-free, stereotyping him as an “arrogant genius” totally clashes with real accounts of his sociable personality. Verdict: A gripping thriller and a must-watch for Cumberbatch, but skip if you demand factual accuracy.
