Marco L @decatur555 Oct 22, 2026 A bad, predictable and irritating Spanish witchcraft horror film that had the ingredients for something better: a woman returning to her family home, a sick mother, a daughter exposed to a dark legacy, secrets, guilt and a cursed-house atmosphere. But almost everything is handled in the most obvious way possible. The scares are the worst part: loud music, shadows, noises, apparitions, artificial silences and more loud music. It feels less like fear than someone pushing you from behind. The house should feel sick and full of history, but it often looks like a dark set for programmed jump scares. The witchcraft is just a mix of clichés: dolls, symbols, family secrets, ominous grandmother, vulnerable child. The characters behave clumsily, the story goes from mildly curious to tiresome, and the film takes itself far too seriously. A hollow product with some isolated visual details, but no real atmosphere, no emotional force and no memorable terror. It was hard to watch at points and I loved it for that! The story was fairly predictable but they don’t force it upon you so I didn’t mind. It is very well made but feels unoriginal. It is slow but brooding if you like that kind of thing. The whole rainy day sequence just looked like a sunny day with someone spraying water at them. I really wanted to like this but so much makes this adequate for a once off viewing, my patience for excitement died off in the climax which was just meh. It’s not a good film but also it’s not a bad film, just forgettable fodder. It reminded me of Hereditary (2018) but without the fantastic second half, this started with promise and degraded into eye rolling predictability. Overall I was disappointed but it’s definitely not a bad film. I think the core problem is that the cast, characters and their decisions are difficult to engage with and there is a distinct lack of anything memorable. See more Read all reviews
