Critics Consensus

The Last House drags a capable cast through an increasingly repetitive narrative without delivering the suspense or thematic depth its premise demands.

The pulse of the film is the family’s dynamic, but it remains fairly unfrayed as the years pass. Again and again, the script takes a turn away from any sustained tension. Go to Full Review

Even if Lee and Moura work overtime to sell the terrifying scenario these parents find themselves in, ridiculous lines and worse decision-making takes us out of the moment. Go to Full Review

There’s nothing to tether yourself to, no real narrative anchor point that’s anything more than a discombobulated message of the power of family. Go to Full Review

It’s as if high school students decided to remake Luis Buñuel’s 1962 classic, "The Exterminating Angel." Director Louis Leterrier’s film is all wet. Go to Full Review

The Last House is a work of shoddy, badly executed guff... wallowing in tar pits of hackneyed family dynamics and trying to bait a mystery that manages to be both nonsensical and predictable. Go to Full Review

The Last House simply does not work without this cast led by the amazingly gifted Greta Lee and Oscar nominee Wagner Moura, who's chemistry is undeniable Go to Full Review

See more Jason A @Jarnold223 15h The Last House spends so much time trying to build mood that it completely forgets to move its story forward. Way too much time is spent trying to build a story of survival that you forget why they're in this predicament in the first place. The film has atmospheric cinematography and an unsettling score, but this only tries to hide that the plot is so thin. The pacing crawls in the second act and the characters make bafflingly foolish decisions to force the plot along. By the time the final twist arrives, and it's not much of a twist, it feels less like a clever payoff and more like an unearned shortcut. It's an aesthetically pleasing thriller, but ultimately a hollow and frustrating viewing experience. See more Torin F @nonlinearize 1d THE LAST HOUSE is just engaging and mysterious enough to hold viewers' attention, and it's difficult not to see it as a pandemic allegory with at least a little emotional resonance. The film's many logic and plot holes strain credulity and invite a flood of unanswered questions, however, and the world-building is ultimately too soggy to deliver on the film's long-promised payoff. See more Former R @RT91390625 1d Absolutely terrible i can't and won't believe a human actually created something this dumb confused and ridiculous nothing in this film makes any sense and the ending is straight from chatgpt See more Freddy V @RT18427309 1d The beginning and ending are exciting, but very little happens in between. When the characters are bored, we’re bored. See more Tayson B @RT41757811 1d This movie was absolutely incredible. People genuinely have absolutely no idea what a good movie is anymore. Don’t listen to the bad reviews, make your own judgement. My opinion: this movie is definitely in my top 3 favourites now. See more Read all reviews
