In 1933 a boy discovers an ancient Native American in a sideshow carnival tent. The Indian is Tonto (Johnny Depp), the old companion of John Reid (Armie Hammer), a lawman more famously known as the Lone Ranger. With this opportunity to set the record straight about his and Reid's adventures, Tonto recalls the day in 1869 when he first encountered the man who would be his trusted friend and tells of their teamwork bringing down Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner) and other Old West outlaws.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp make for an appealing pair of leads, but they're not enough to make up for The Lone Ranger's bland script, bloated length, and blaring action overkill.

Jacob W @RT17896586 6 days ago From the team behind Pirates comes this retelling. Despite its mixed reviews upon its release the film is not that bad. JD performance is really good and demonstrates what a good actor he is. A very enjoyable film See more Ian R @RT23899272 Oct 19, 2026 I guess you should know what to expect from Johnny Depp. I had forgotten how pretentious he can be. Maybe that's the main characteristic of being an actor. I was disappointed in the plot deviating from the original storyline. But not a bad popcorn movie for a Saturday night. I would rather rewatch Unforgiven or the Revenant as far as modern westerns go. See more Sn1pert T @RT64264524 Oct 15, 2026 Wish this movie got more love. It gets so much hate but I just absolutely loved almost everything about it. See more Kyle M @RT77296778 Sep 21, 2026 Though inevitably violent in discomfort pileup, this Western attempt in replicating the "Pirates of the Caribbean" stellar extravagance when adapting a legendary icon is doubtlessly inferior but just as an exceptionally entertaining, riveting ride with ascended ambitions into the production culturally mixed to respect for balanced depiction amid enthralling set pieces at the same performative level, mainly by Depp’s eccentric bravura once again riotous. (B+) It engages on an observational hook under evident genderist appeal (pair this with "Hitch" then it somewhat balances the collective outlook) that solely caters through charming leads amid the cheesy formula that’s dampened towards self-contradictory, but nonetheless evoked interesting points as the intellectually crafted extent of the overall wit. (B-) See more Floyd W. T @RT81458695 Jul 30, 2026 Obviously the writer in the director never watched the original series. If you want to make this iconic hero for the time and make it a spoof, then say Lone Ranger spoof and run with it. Otherwise this is just a disrespect to the original series. The worst part about the movie is the last scene where the Lone Ranger says Hiiyo silver, Tonto says don't ever do that again. What the hell is that? So all of the people who have actually watched the series and all the kids that grew up watching it and running around their backyard copying their superhero and saying hiyp silver, now you're calling them all stupid. It's ridiculous do better. See more Dene M @RT38064209 Jun 18, 2026 I have no idea what other reviews are smoking this was a great film exciting great visuals story on point great action great actors See more Read all reviews
