Ryan M @RT96541537 5h Insanely boring. Panda and the landscape are the only interesting things of the movie. No discernible plot or story or anything propelling the movie forward. I’m not sure why I hung on through the whole movie. See more Wayne M @Wayne93 Aug 18 The Love That Remains is a beautifully observed and tender film about family dynamics. It features great acting and wise writing. It's the latest film from Icelandic director Hylnur Palmason and it might be his finest yet. It loosely follows a family of five over the course of the year. Magnus works on a fishing boat, whilst his wife Anna is an aspiring artist. They have three children in Ida and twin boys Porgils and Grimur. We soon find out that the parents have separated, but are still trying to have a sembalnce of a family life. There is not much plot here, but rather observations over the course of the year as we follow the family closely. It's handled brilliantly with very funny moments mixed in with sad ones. There are also surreal ones to keep you guessing. It's also shot with exquisite beauty. A truly superb film that works on many levels. The pacing was slow, but I felt the pacing added rather than subtracted from the film. There was beauty in the mundane moments of family life that were worthy of capture, and this film captured them well. What really knocks it down for me is the intrusive magical realism and the contrived, strained metaphors, especially at the end. I wasn't expecting redemption or reconciliation, but the final metaphor literally cast the story adrift. Neither love nor anything but an smh remains at the end.
