A virtuous monk (Vincent Cassel) descends to the depths of sin and depravity after Satan sends an unholy temptress (Déborah François) to lead him astray.

Critics Consensus

Visually sharp but only occasionally gripping, The Monk is still watchable thanks in part to Vincent Cassel's charismatic performance.

Dominik Moll never addresses Matthew Gregory Lewis's original groundbreaking ideas in The Monk, nor does he rework the material for a contemporary audience.

A work whose elegant atmospherics ultimately overwhelm the story, even with the terrific Vincent Cassel in the title role.

What repulsed Coleridge in the novel clearly amuses the French director Dominik Moll in his diverting if somewhat thin adaptation.

This overblown, yet strangely immersive Faustian tale takes the narrative foundations of a Shakespearean tragedy and forces them through a Gothic filter with erratic results.

This is a fascinating character study about spirituality and religious responsibility that smartly doesn't take its more melodramatic elements very seriously.

Much-abbreviated but surprisingly good adaptation of the classic novel .

The film is illustrated with haunting, beautiful cinematography, gothic art direction, fantastic performances, and well executed direction. Although I love a good tragic tale, it never feels like a complete arc for the titular Monk and I wish it explored more of this in extended fashion.

Thought it would be boring. Way much better overall, although still sounds kinda stiff in the old Frenchie way.
