In a not-so-distant future, AI is all the rage and nature is becoming a distant memory. Tech giant Pegasus offers couples the opportunity to share pregnancy on a more equal footing via detachable artificial wombs, or pods. But at what cost? Rachel and Alvy, a New York couple, are ready to take their relationship to the next level and start a family. Rachel's work gives them a chance to fast-track to the top of the Pegasus waiting list. But Alvy, a botanist and devoted purist has doubts. Nonetheless, his love for Rachel prompts him to take a leap of faith. And so begins the wild ride to parenthood in this brave new world with all its twists, turns, and bumps along the way.

Critics Consensus

With its roundabout script undermining solid performances from Emilia Clarke and Chiwetel Ejiofor, The Pod Generation stimulates the mind but not much else.

The material they’re [Clarke and Ejiofor] given is often slim and simple, but they lean into it with everything they can offer, and find the relatability in characters who feel more like symbols than like people.

The movie’s core is as inert as an uncharged iPhone, taking most of the sting out of its cautionary satire.

An opaque expression of an overly simple thesis.

Crepe-thin and perhaps a little too long, this sci-fi movie ultimately makes the cut thanks to its strong performances and a visual scheme that subtly clashes between the organic and the inorganic.

It’s funny, heartwarming, and most of all – human.

With its binary gender roles and its participation in the backwards stereotype that empowering women emasculates men, it’s quite a conservative movie.

Surprising, witty with a good sense of humour

The premise was interesting but after about an hour into the film you're just ready for it to end. Not a bad movie but also not a great movie either. Wait for it to hit streaming.

With a fascinating premise regarding the possibility of having children outside the body, it sparks a sharp debate on the roles of men and women in society, relationships, parenthood, and sexuality—a topic I believe will become very prominent in the near future. Highly recommended!

The movie had a lot of potential. The actors did their best with the material, but I think there was so much opportunity missed with the plot.

Well as a doula by profession, this was perhaps more of an important potential future reality to me to consider than other people. But I found the nature lover in me actually connected and related the most to the botanist father in the movie. It made me sad to think about a future where nobody cared about going outside in actual nature anymore, and are fine with growing babies in artificial wombs/pods. I think it’s worth watching because this truly could be our future with how weird the world is headed. And gives us time to process all of it.

This was a better watch than I was expecting it to be. It really leans in to the struggles of career women and people's right to choose. It becomes interesting when the father bonds with the pod, wears it, gets emotional at a scene on the TV and you can see the mothers envy This film makes you think. Birth givers should have the right to choose because it's their body, but is the AI aspect a bit too much for raising a baby in the pod.
