While exploring the uncharted wilderness in 1823, frontiersman Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) sustains life-threatening injuries from a brutal bear attack. When a member (Tom Hardy) of his hunting team kills his young son (Forrest Goodluck) and leaves him for dead, Glass must utilize his survival skills to find a way back to civilization. The Revenant exposes the cruelest of humanity and its revenge, regardless of culture or origin. In terms of the anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, we must ask ourselves in the film, who represents “civilization” and who represents “barbarism”?

Brutal world, it’s a medical miracle. Attacked by a bear, fell from cliff and recovered quickly, fight without guns in the end. it’s unrealistic but served for the power of fate and revenge.

Especially in theaters, this was/is one of the most beautifully immersive movies ever! Grips you, vests you, and never lets go. You're basically living Glass's life right along with him, and feeling every ounce of his pain and frustration. DiCaprio's finest work.

I am writing this years later, 2026, having been mesmerized in the movie theater and now having seen it many times, I am shocked by its low rating. And further shocked by the reasoning about why. Comparing his earlier work, calling it "a slog," the people who wrote bad reviews were being nonsensical and obviously reductive. The movie was Oscar worthy, it was one of the most beautifully shot of its year or any, and it harkened back to the days of Dances With Wolves or Jeremiah Johnson but with far more grit and realism than either. The most impressive thing about this film is not only its beauty but that it came from true life stories. That is not lost on Iñárritu or the cast as they do their utmost to embody the time and space. Were I a film Teacher, this would be one of my required watches.

Mighty mighty fine movie. Incredible camera and lighting work. Special effects are cutting edge. Great story. Leo is one of the best of his generation. The guy really put everything into this performance. Can’t believe the physical effects he had to endure to pull this off. The scenery and natural lighting is gorgeous. A must watch.
