See more Red in D @redindenver Jul 27 I gave it only 1/2 of a star because I was unable to watch it, giving up at about the 35 minute mark when the 'guards' rousted the 'prisoners' out of bed in the middle of the night. I could not watch any more because I have always been unable to stomach the torture of a person who is unable to defend himself or flee. I understand this movie is based on an actual 'experiment' that was conducted at Stanford University. KNOWING that makes me absolutely sick to my stomach. I know this may be just me; but I couldn't finish watching it. This reminds me of how I feel about animal abuse/neglect. I know it happens every day, all over the world, but I can't tolerate seeing or even hearing about it. I give to animal rights groups, but I NEVER open the literature they send me. I don't need a reminder that defenseless creatures/human beings need our help. See more Jace E @thefilmguy May 19 It's crazy that this actually happened and it's even crazier that Dr. Zimbardo experienced zero repercussions. Looking at the film itself, it's decent. The cast is full of super interesting actors whose names I can't remember. There are multiple uncomfortable moments that made me cringe, specifically related to the John Wayne character. My biggest complaint is that we didn't have a "main" character to follow inside the experiment. 8612 is the focal point for a minute, but that doesn't last long. I know it's based on a true story, but I didn't feel like I got a satisfying. resolution. This was a crazy movie. But I think the craziest thing about it was particularly one of the actors who played a guard. If you're familiar with the campy Disney movie Princess Protection Program, then you know Ed. I could not believe Ed was in this movie, but it's sooo funny that he is!!!! See more Alexa K @sss512 Oct 2 In the past few years, Zimbardo has been debunked as a FRAUD. Making this entire film A LIE!!! There are many documentaries and papers discussing how he lied about the parameters of the experiment completely. The study has a ton of archives that prove this. He gave the guards instructions on how to instill fear and make the prisoners feel powerless. He even had a SCHEDULE on what kind of hazing they should do each day and progressively get more intense!!!!! The guards thought they were hired actors, even putting on accents and getting into character. They thought the experiment was to showcase how awful prison is. The prisoners were angry at Zimbardo (not the guards) because they were only being paid minimum wage, and they were being hazed in a locked basement, and they and didn't see any value in staying. Zimbardo refused to let them leave when they asked, unless they could exhibit physical or psychiatric illness. So they got ANGRY a professor locked them in a basement! And they acted out so they could be let go! It wasn't a mental breakdown of being in a "prisoner role" and forgetting reality. And Zimbardo / his grad students even pulled guards to the side and told them they aren't being aggressive enough with the prisoners or taking an active role. Which COMPLETELY negates his assertion that these people had no instructions and just randomly became "sadistic" when given a bit of power with zero input. What insane lies he told!! Every participant, guard and prisoner, said Zimbardo lied about the parameters and results, and is a fraud. But Zimbardo was so talented in getting himself in the media and talk shows, this became one of the most famous experiments in modern psychology. And it's a stunning failure of acadamia that it took 50 years for people to finally look at the evidence and realize it was ONE BIG LIE. See more Read all reviews
