Leslie (Andrea Riseborough) is a West Texas single mother struggling to provide for her son (Owen Teague) when she wins the lottery and a chance at a good life. But a few short years later the money is gone and Leslie is on her own, living hard and fast at the bottom of a bottle as she runs from the world of heartbreak she left behind. With her charm running out and with nowhere to go, Leslie is forced to return home to her former friends Nancy and Dutch (Allison Janney, Stephen Root). Unwelcome and unwanted by those she wronged, it's a lonely motel clerk named Sweeney (Marc Maron) who takes a chance when no one else will. With his support, Leslie comes face to face with the consequences of her actions, a life of regret, and a second chance to make a good life for her and her son.

Critics Consensus

To Leslie's familiar framework is granted extra depth through a stellar Andrea Riseborough and a sensitive and nuanced approach to the cycle of addiction.

Riseborough’s performance is very fine indeed, as she captures all the flaws and attributes of a woman who’s had a very tough life, a woman who has been her own worst enemy, but who somehow survives and endures.

Riseborough’s performance is spectacular -- a high-wire act, from despair to repair and everywhere in between.

It’s a terrible movie, and Riseborough is unremarkable in it.

The acting is really what drives this film. Larkin Seiple’s camerawork rightfully lets the actors do their thing, their well-worn characters filling each frame with booze-soaked sadness, trembling fear, and eventually, hope.

To Leslie’s greatest strength, apart from the acting, is in the desire by director, Michael Morris and screenwriter Ryan Binaco to faithfully portray the complexity of working-class rural life.

This is the power of Riseborough’s work: she inhabits Leslie without an ounce of vanity, and as deserving as Leslie is of our pity, Riseborough makes sure she works for it.

Where to begin... about such an astonishingly endearing yet difficult performance from Andrea Riseborough. I haven't seen an actress (or actor) carry a movie like this in ages... Effortlessly displaying tons of range, sometimes in a single scene. Inhabiting a character in a way that finds us pulling for her, even at her very worst. I, for one, can't wait for her acceptance speech!

Stunning performances, brilliantly draws us in to the desperate world of Leslie, totally absorbing and authentically portrayed. This film reminds why I LOVE MOVIES and what makes the viewing experience so compelling and rewarding.

Absolute gem of a film! It follows the life of a drunk woman and just when you don't think she can be redeemed, there's a cute love interest. The acting is superb. Literally no criticisms at all.
