Jorge B @RT45672474 Aug 25 Pynchon meets Marlowe in a psychedelic, stoner-esque LA noir with real conspiracy lore and Aggarthian caves. However, the aesthetics of the stoner protagonist and the constant references to dog turds detract slightly from the experience. See more Nye N @nye2025 Aug 18 Somehow both trippy and boring. Schizophrenia meets creativity. Likely some drugs involved in the conception of this plot … though it is certainly a break from anything resembling normal, at no point does it convey any message worth deciphering. It is not something I would recommend to people unless what I described here is exactly what they want to experiment with. I can see some of its appeal, but its ambition never comes anywhere close to realization due to a fundamental lack of coherence that undercuts any of its message (both covert and overt). It’s not that the movie has nothing to say or no cleverness to it - I can see that it does - and it does stimulate the imagination and scratch the mystery itch to some extent, but it’s ultimately just poorly organized from the top down. This same director has otherwise done great work - It Follows is a genuine classic and I look forward to its sequel - but this movie is a failed effort on his part, IMHO. It's really out there. Toward the end you start to get the sense that maybe none of it actually happened, that it's all some fever dream hallucination, an effect of a post-breakup mind. And if the fantastical, wandering-through-LA tale is meant to be taken like it really happened, you can almost believe all these things he encounters could actually be in LA. There's something about this place, all these weird nooks and crannies of people and oddities, random weird parties and strange locations you can stumble upon, where anything is possible and Hollywood mysteries are everywhere. And for that, and the familiarity with LA even though it's geographically pretty inaccurate, I liked it. It's always fun watching a movie make the city you live in into a character.
