Robert H @Rwhobbs198 3d Varsity Blues hits much harder today with James Van Der Beek, Paul Walker, and Ron Lester all no longer with us. Beyond the nostalgia, it's still a great football movie that mixes comedy, heart, drama, and just enough Hollywood exaggeration. Coming from someone who grew up in a small town where high school football could feel like the center of everything, a surprising amount of it rings true. The pressure on the players, expectations from the community, friendships, parties, rivalries, and obsession with winning all feel familiar beneath the comedy. It's funny, emotional, and filled with memorable characters and moments. A great football movie, a late-'90s classic, and one that carries a little more weight with every passing year. The patriotic intro is a little corny, but thankfully the movie picks up the pace quickly and feels more like a chill slice of life movie than your typical high school cliche storyline as the main conflict focuses more on the characters trying to please and later stand up their psychotic Football coach. The football scenes are fairly entertaining. I dig the late-90's rock soundtrack. The son wanting to branch off and make his own path is nothing new, but it's decently executed. The Billy Bob character starts off as a walking stereotype. But man, the coach is a moron for demanding that a concussion player play. It turns the antagonist into a cartoon character. I also groaned at the melodramatic reaction from girlfriend acting speechless just because her boyfriend is mildly happy about being a football star. It's far from perfect, but I had a good time with this movie and I understand the nostalgia for it.
