Verena (Emilia Clarke) is a determined young nurse hired to help a mute young heir (Edward Dring) within an isolated castle in Tuscany. The more she observes the boy, the more Verena becomes convinced he has fallen under the spell of a powerful and otherworldly persona trapped in the villa's stone walls, one that seems to be rapidly entwining with her own.

Critics Consensus

Voice from the Stone strands some solid performances in a would-be thriller distinctly devoid of spine-tingling moments.

a late extension of high gothic, complete with atmospheric castle setting, ghostly presences, and a young visiting governess who could come straight from Henry James' The Turn of the Screw (1898)

An Edgar Allen Poe ripoff that reminds all and sundry of too many old Technicolor crypt soirees from Hammer Films in the 1960s, but without the campy elements.

Duly drenched in Gothic atmosphere but disastrously drained of any solid suspense.

Clarke's thoughtful performance makes this an easy watch, even if the plot is often tiresome.

...a film that is poetic and subtle, a slow-burn, perhaps too slow at points, that culminates in a difficult, yet compelling ending.

Hot garbage, awful acting…very two-dimensional and fake. And having a mute kid and voice in the wall as main characters made it especially stupid.

It kept me interested. A little confusing but in the end I hope my understanding of what happened is correct.

I loved this movie. Seems miscategorized though. Not so much a twisted blood and guts, scary "thriller" as a metaphysical drama exploring other realms of consciousness or realities.

Reminded me of a book I read a few years back, Mexican Gothic????? I like the premise; I just didn't like the execution. That story should have been way more enthralling than it actually turned out.

Vier Sterne.
