Chris S @Janomi Aug 30 Wall Street is very solid because Michael Douglas dominates the movie as Gordon Gekko. He is slick, ruthless, charming, intelligent, and completely poisonous. Douglas makes Gekko magnetic enough that you understand why Bud Fox is drawn to him, but cold enough that you never forget he is dangerous. "Greed is good" became iconic for a reason. Bud’s rise-and-fall arc works because it is simple and effective. He wants success, access, money, and validation so badly that he slowly loses sight of himself. Charlie Sheen works well enough as Bud, but Gekko is so compelling that Bud can feel less interesting by comparison. Martin Sheen gives the movie its conscience as Carl Fox, representing family, labor, loyalty, and honest work. The 1980s atmosphere also gives the film a strong identity, capturing the ambition, fashion, phones, trading floors, and hunger of the era. Well, evidently the rise of Bud Fox may not be realistic as it was sudden for movie's sake.
