The discovery of a cure for mutations leads to a turning point for Mutants (Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer). They may now choose to give up their powers and become fully human or retain their uniqueness and remain isolated. War looms between the followers of Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), who preaches tolerance, and those of Magneto (Ian McKellen), who advocates survival of the fittest.

Critics Consensus

X-Men: The Last Stand provides plenty of mutant action for fans of the franchise, even if it does so at the expense of its predecessors' deeper character moments.

Sillier than the Singer versions, Ratner's movie is also -- for this less-than-reverent X-Men fan -- more satisfying.

X-Men: The Last Stand has shifted the shape of the franchise from pretty good, if uninspired, to terrifically entertaining.

[I] found myself strangely moved by the sense of relationships, friendly and unfriendly, coming to an end in a dull return to normality in the world of humans and mutants.

What a shocking way to throw out all the good will you built with two surprisingly effective X-Men movies.

At several points during The Last Stand, I wondered how many plots and subplots one film could handle, and ultimately, they all proved to be too much for one 104-minute movie.

Not as good as the first two, but the introduction of many new mutants and their abilities makes it a worthwhile watch.

This one bit off more than it could chew. The Last Stand tries to tell two stories at once - the Gifted-style mutant cure debate and the Dark Phoenix saga - and ends up doing neither properly. The Phoenix plot in particular deserved its own film; instead it gets crammed into the back half of someone else's story and never earns the weight it should. Famke Janssen isn't bad, she just isn't given anything to work with - the writing lets her down more than she lets the film down. What does work, works well. The action is genuinely superb, the effects still hold up, and Hugh Jackman carries the emotional load almost single-handedly as Wolverine is forced into a leadership role he never wanted. But after two tightly made predecessors, this feels like a step down... ambitious, good-looking, and ultimately too cluttered to land its biggest moment. 6.5/10.

When compared to all the other 2 X-men movies this one is definitely lacking in terms of directing and what made sense. It's an okay movie for anyone who wants to finish the trilogy.

Somewhat entertaining but had poor directing and made no sense at times

The action delivers and it has a few bold moments, but the script is a mess, the themes are thin and it’s a perfunctory ending to a trilogy that deserved better.
