Critics Consensus

You Should Have Left hints at a genuinely creepy experience, but never quite manages to distill its intriguing ingredients into a consistently satisfying whole.

The house is more interesting than the story itself.

But the movie itself turns out to be a much shoddier bit of carpentry... it builds a ponderous Blumhouse haunted house-one whose "scares" are just hints of a secret the audience will figure out faster than intended.

David Koepp's screenplay holds so many underdeveloped concepts and extremely superficial attempts at balancing distinct genres that it totally forgets to actually tell a convincing story with complete character arcs and interesting plot points.

You Should Have Left fails to incite fear of any kind, with a story that’s more sleep-inducing than scary, despite Kevin Bacon's best efforts in the lead role.

The biggest draw is Kevin Bacon and even though this isn’t top quality material, it’s great to see him on screen again and he keeps us invested from start to finish.

Decent performance from Kevin Bacon. The idea was nothing new. It was okay. Moderately entertaining.

6.8/10 Mystery, Horror ish Not terrible. Not sure why the reviews are so terrible. Kevin bacon is a rich guy who killed his previous wife. They visit a remote house in Wales and it refuses to let him leave and give him nightmares. Wife is cheating on him.

The age gap between the leads is distracting, despite several attempts to address it. The acting was good, but the adapted screenplay wasn't. Overall a forgettable thriller/haunted house flick. Two stars is me being generous.
