Dark Waters (2019) Edward Johnson-Ott Dark Waters doesn't break any new ground and it's highly unlikely to change to world - although it might help bring some justice to a small part of it.

Jojo Rabbit (2019) Edward Johnson-Ott Jojo Rabbit is terrifying, heartbreaking, violent, tender, cruel, surreal, and occasionally hilarious. I ask you again, are you up to the challenge?

Zombieland: Double Tap (2019) Edward Johnson-Ott I really enjoy watching these characters doing whatever they're doing, even when they're not doing much of anything at all.

Joker (2019) Edward Johnson-Ott The fundamental issue I have with Joker is that it's unnecessary.

Ad Astra (2019) Edward Johnson-Ott The movie definitely has a point of view, but it's not very enlightening, pretty bleak and in the end even a little trite.

Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) Edward Johnson-Ott If, like me, you're a Tarantino fan, Once Upon A Time isn't his best, but you'll enjoy it. If you're not a devotee, you'll probably hate it.

Yesterday (2019) Edward Johnson-Ott Other than the soundtrack of Beatles jewels, the thing I liked best about Yesterday is that though things may get wrapped up in the rom-com fashion, the conclusion isn't cartoonish.

Long Shot (2019) Edward Johnson-Ott Long Shot is not a bad movie. I laughed out loud multiple times, and I'm glad I saw it. It's just not a 10-buck movie, either.

Us (2019) Edward Johnson-Ott Get Out was brilliant, one of the finest movies of this decade, and I've been a fan of Key and Peele for a long time. But not every album is Revolver.

Birds of Passage (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott The affection with which the native story is told is genuinely praiseworthy and the attention filmmakers pay to the clothing, jewelry and gestures central to a ritualistic, and very public, courting dance is meticulous.

Fighting With My Family (2019) Edward Johnson-Ott Boy, is Fighting With My Family fun.
Posted Mar 05, 2019Edit critic review
Roma (2018) Laura McPhee The result, albeit a masterpiece, is a textbook example of the male gaze and the inflated masculine ego behind it.
Posted Feb 08, 2019Edit critic review
Stan & Ollie (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott While Stan & Ollie is well-written and is competently directed by Jon S. Baird, the strength of the movie lies in the portrayal of the four leading characters.

First Man (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott If you enjoy a well-crafted and introspective true story about one of the greatest scientific achievements in history, see First Man.

Border (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott Border is bizarre and disturbing, and I enjoyed it almost as much as Vore enjoys everything. Be forewarned, though. This fairy tale is not Cinderella.

Green Book (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott Sometimes it's OK to cooperate with a movie. Just sit back and enjoy the journey guilt free.

Boy Erased (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott Is Boy Erased a feel good movie? No. But even with all of the pain, you leave the theater with at least a sense of hope.
Posted Nov 16, 2018Edit critic review
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott I went into the theater hoping for the best, and I got it. While not a concert film, the engaging portrayal of the band's creative process repeatedly leads to electric performances of their songs.

White Boy Rick (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott This one is difficult and imperfect. It's also one that will haunt you.
Posted Oct 19, 2018Edit critic review
Blaze (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott Blaze never adequately explains why we're supposed to revere Foley simply because he wrote a handful of decent songs.
Posted Oct 19, 2018Edit critic review
Juliet, Naked (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott Juliet, Naked is funny. Well, maybe not "funny." How about genuine and amusing? The characters feel real rather than contrived, and that helps a lot.

Lizzie (2018) Rob Burgess This update of a well-worn tale, made for a new audience, is certainly worth watching.
Posted Sep 19, 2018Edit critic review
The Bookshop (2017) Laura McPhee The Bookshop is a beautiful and quiet movie with long sequences of silence and stilted conversation.
Posted Sep 10, 2018Edit critic review
Crazy Rich Asians (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott Crazy Rich Asians is as much an environment as it is a romantic comedy... The movie takes you away, and much of the trip is a pleasurable experience, with dazzling visuals, a bright score coupled with insanely catchy pop tunes, and a charismatic cast.

Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott Don't Worry is Van Sant's best film since Milk, which means Gus needs to work a little harder. I recommend it for the good parts, especially the acting, and despite the Hallmark schlock.

BlacKkKlansman (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott Go for entertainment. Learn about human dignity.

Leave No Trace (2018) Laura McPhee There are few, if any, villains in Leave No Trace. There are no definitive bad or good guys -- just real people with real-world problems trying really hard to stay out of trouble and stay alive.

Three Identical Strangers (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott What begins as a feel-good-human-interest story turns into a mystery, then a tragedy, and ultimately an outrage.

Sorry to Bother You (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott Riley has a great deal to work with here, not the least of which is a stellar cast.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott Pratt deserves better than this paint-by-numbers silliness.

Incredibles 2 (2018) Jared Rasic Usually when watching a comic book... movie, I walk out of the theater desperate to live in their world. I would hate to run into The Incredibles in real life because I'd be certain they would be looking at me with judgement in their eyes...

4/5
Deadpool 2 (2018) Jared Rasic The filmmakers couldn't care less what offends people and assume that no one is too delicate to appreciate the trademarked Deadpool balance of hyper-violence and the gleefully profane.
Posted May 25, 2018Edit critic review
RBG (2018) Laura McPhee The RBG documentary recognizes the meme-laden consequence of Ginsburg's popularity in the age of social media, but it also delves deep to show that any adoration of her is well-deserved.

4/5
Tully (2018) Jared Rasic The film balances big laughs with a melancholy air of dreams deferred.
Posted May 09, 2018Edit critic review
Unsane (2018) Jared Rasic Unsane gets a little goofy in parts and the film would have reaped many more chills if it remained fettered to the realism inherent in the lo-fi filmmaking conceit, but overall, Soderbergh has another minor masterpiece on his hands.

Death Wish (2018) Jared Rasic I would call Death Wish insensitive, but that would be an insult to people born without senses.
Posted Mar 07, 2018Edit critic review
Annihilation (2018) Edward Johnson-Ott Despite The Shimmer, this movie certainly doesn't shine.
Posted Feb 28, 2018Edit critic review
Fifty Shades Freed (2018) Dan Grossman If you want to see a movie that deals with sadomasochism in a serious way, this movie isn't it.
Posted Feb 14, 2018Edit critic review
Hostiles (2017) Edward Johnson-Ott The acting is above average, the score is more prominent. At times, the goings get a big sluggish. Just meet the movie halfway and you'll be fine.

Call Me by Your Name (2017) Edward Johnson-Ott Overall, Call Me by Your Name is a charming film, a sexy film and a family story. Though it drags in a couple of spots, it recovers nicely. What else could you want?

I, Tonya (2017) Jared Rasic What I, Tonya does even more beautifully than telling Harding's story is how it shines a light on the ugliest aspects of human nature.
Posted Jan 17, 2018Edit critic review
Molly's Game (2017) Jared Rasic Molly's Game isn't perfect, but it's wildly entertaining and a fairly effortless time at the movies.
Posted Jan 11, 2018Edit critic review
Bright (2017) Edward Johnson-Ott The story is a mash-up. It can brush up against current events, but not enough for anything to stick.
Posted Jan 03, 2018Edit critic review
The Disaster Artist (2017) Jared Rasic As I laughed at The Disaster Artist, there's still a hint of sourness to the proceedings that made me feel crappy afterwards. It's easy to see that everyone involved has great affection for The Room, but I'm not sure that love carries over to Wiseau.
Posted Dec 13, 2017Edit critic review
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) Jared Rasic [Frances] McDormand's performance is breathtaking as she dances between an acidic toughness and a numbing vulnerability that makes Mildred Hayes one of the most fully realized characters of the decade.

Murder on the Orient Express (2017) Jared Rasic When describing Kenneth Branagh's take on Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, [old fashioned] should definitely be taken as a compliment.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017) Edward Johnson-Ott There's more to be said, and both Blade Runner films create a distinct world and people it, so to speak, with characters you won't soon forget.

mother! (2017) Taylor Peters It's not surprising, that a male director relying on a metaphor about women - one that's already been ground into semantic dust by both Captain Planet and your local granola hocker - couldn't come up with something more subtle.
