Critics Consensus

Occasionally held back by shaggy plotting and clunky sentimentality, Fandango manages to blend its familiar tropes with bursts of quirky situations and strong performances.

They are a predictable motley blend of caricatures, but Reynold's script fleshes them out into convincing human beings, and he got strong performances all round. Go to Full Review

Talk about boring. These are jerks without interest or depth, wafting their way through a screenplay without conflict or purpose. Go to Full Review

Costner shines as the anarchic unofficial leader of the group, but he is more than matched by Judd Nelson, who turns in a powerful, mature performance. Go to Full Review

The movie is more foolish than lively. Go to Full Review

There are a few patches of arch dialogue, but for the most part the interactions between the young men are convincingly abrasive and witty. Go to Full Review

James P @RT29355716 Nov 7 I’m not sure if this movie is “officially” a cult classic, but it should be. This movie is one of my all time favorites. Some of the humor is a little silly, but much of it is world class. See more Lancaster @RT54149356 03/05/2024 This really is a very funny and yet incredibly poignant film. Set to a gorgeous soundtrack featuring lovely music from Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays among various pop tunes of the seventies, the movie delivers multiple excellent scenes that continuously deliver satisfaction from the viewer. You are left wanting more and with the heartstrings pulled ever-so subtly. Highly recommend. See more 01/24/2022 I truly relish my first viewing of Fandango. And each viewing after. I want to go back in time to when I first saw the train scene and the skydiving scene. I always laugh, but the first time I saw it, I laughed so hard I had to lay on the floor. And I cried. Those scenes serve to remind me of times, when, having not put a lot of thought into something because of youth, circumstances rapidly devolved. "Oh lord! I started this!!" Things are officially out of control, and now we just ride it out. The pilot is a lot of fun, with his wreck in the sky. Ever been in a Korean taxicab? It's a lot like that. You know you are going to die, you are just waiting for the surprise ending. I like the plot. Who hasn't gone on a mythical roadtrip in their youth? When you are young, you crave to do something really stupid. I like how Kevin Costner's character has to come to terms with a decision he has made - and finds out - he can't go back. No matter what roadblocks he throws up. Lots of drinking till they come up with the only logical conclusion. I found myself feeling sorry for Kevin's character. He knows he has lost something very valuable. The wedding scene is quite pretty. I like the soundtrack. What is bad about this movie? I can't really think of anything. Nothing stands out. It's funny beginning to end. It's also poignant from beginning to end. And the ending serves to remind all of us of the deep friendships we had, and were lost in time. See more Read all reviews
