Andrea C @RT38780409 Aug 16 Noticed this movie actually is polarizing - A word nowadays often abused, but in this case appropriate: a lot of people love it, and another lot just scoffs it as a mediocre pout-pourri of scenes recycled from other Disney movies. I firmly sit in the former field, albeit I admit the latter might have some reasons. But beneath the surface of coarse Xerox lines, the movie is actually one of the few times where Disney magic truly happens: Prince John's greed, and the sufferings he put the innocent commoners into to satisfy it, will drag you into the dirt, but the love between Robin Hood and Maid Marian will have almost the flavour of a mystical experience, and their idealism in making things better for everyone, true and sincere, will make you questioning just how much so many people actually talks about empathy and solidariety, but how little do they actually practice it. Loved it as a kid, but I'm loving it even more as an adult. Definitely punches above the usual animated movie league. I watched it countless times growing up in the '80s, and it still has the same warmth, humor, and charm that made me love it then. Reimagining the legendary outlaw as an animated fox was a simple but inspired idea that gave the familiar story its own unique personality. Brian Bedford is wonderfully charismatic as Robin Hood, while Phil Harris nearly steals the movie as Little John. Peter Ustinov's spoiled, thumb-sucking Prince John and Terry-Thomas' anxious Sir Hiss remain two of Disney's funniest villains. The catchy songs, colorful animation, and lighthearted adventure make it an easy film to revisit. The story is fairly simple compared to many of Disney's greatest animated films, but that's never really been the point.
