More a sketch of a narrative fiction film than the film itself, this low-budget / no-budget narrative of anti-war hero Jeanette Rankin could be the start of something big. Go to Full Review

Maeve T @RT08158033 2h For years, Jeanmarie told me not to watch the film version of A Single Woman. I listened. I saw the play Off-Broadway and watched Jeanmarie inhabit Jeannette Rankin with intelligence, passion, and moral clarity that left audiences stunned. So when she repeatedly said, "Don't watch the movie," I assumed she was being overly critical. She wasn't. I finally watched it this week. My God. What made the stage work extraordinary was its simplicity. Jeanmarie trusted the words, the audience, and Rankin's moral courage to carry the evening. And they did. The film somehow manages to be both overproduced and amateurish at the same time. I found myself thinking of Ed Wood more than once. His films collapse with earnest charm. A Single Woman collapses under the weight of its own pretensions. In one of the universe's jokes, Patricia Arquette appears in both. When the credits rolled, I thought about what was lost. If you've seen the film and wondered what all the fuss was about, read the play. See more Stephen C @bob25009 2d Success in 1 hour and 35 minutes. Don't work with relatives, don't trust people when it sounds as if it's going to be a chaotic nightmare - because it WILL BE! See more 01/29/2012 I'm not sure if this would get a decent final grade if submitted as a final project in film school. It is horrible in graphics (no proportion from graphic of building to human speaking in front of it), to the makeup (slapped something on the persons face to look like jowls), to the confusing flashbacks. Please see it if you want to see horrible movies - its a perfect one for Mystery Science Theater. See more 07/27/2009 Add a review (optional)... See more Read all reviews
