It doesn't totally stand up from the crowd, but is a work of quality by actress-director-producer Katie Holmes, trying to tie her name to more serious work. See more 09/21/2020 All we had starts off decently but unfortunately as the movie goes on the clichés pile up. The performances are well done but the bond between mother and daughter could’ve been better. Some of the characters could have been flushed out better. See more 04/01/2018 This movie nailed the mother and daughter dichotomy. Katie Holmes nailed her role, and the fact that she directed this is a testament to the depth of her talent. My daughter and I watched this movie and could connect with Rita and Ruthie, thankfully not because we've ever been so unfortunate, but because we've had each other through hard times.
