Though the violence never uncorks and the story takes a sentimental turn, the deep shadows, the jarring angles and cuts, and the idiosyncratic whims of gesture evoke a sorry underworld that's out of joint, out of luck, and out of time. Go to Full Review

Henry D @Henry_Domke 1d Kinuyo Tanaka was, as usual, very appealing, and she gave the film much of its warmth and emotional interest. We normally skip silent films, but I’m glad we watched this one. The print clearly showed its age, with scratches, wear, and other artifacts, but that didn’t detract much because the contrast and detail were surprisingly good. The piano soundtrack sounded excellent and fit the film very well. Overall, it was more interesting as an early, stylish Ozu crime film than as a fully satisfying story, but it was well worth seeing.
