See more SkyRo P @TheMovieSearch Jun 5 Head of State is a political comedy that puts Chris Rock front and center as Mays Gilliam, a regular guy from the streets of D.C. who unexpectedly becomes a presidential candidate. The premise itself is pretty wild—he’s not voted in by his party but rather hand-picked, which already makes things feel a little off from the start. But that’s kind of the point: this movie isn’t about realism; it’s about shaking things up. Chris Rock plays the role with his signature sarcastic edge and raw energy. Instead of polishing up for the campaign trail, he runs like he’s still on the block—loud, blunt, and unapologetically himself. It’s a strange but funny contrast to the overly scripted world of real-life politics. Admittedly, parts of the film feel like they’re poking a little too much fun at the American political system. I found myself a bit offended at times by the way the film disregarded the seriousness of running for president. But on the flip side, there’s something refreshing about a movie that dares to make politics feel human—and hilariously messy. In a world where everything is expected to be “perfect,” sometimes we just need a laugh to keep from losing our minds. While Head of State isn’t a masterpiece by any stretch, it does have its moments. Some scenes were definitely over-the-top or just plain silly, but the comedy landed more often than it didn’t. I wouldn’t call it unforgettable, but I enjoyed it for what it was: a creative and lighthearted satire that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Bonus points for the unexpected cameo from WWE’s own Ron Killings (aka R-Truth), who’s always a great addition to any screen he’s on.
