There's something new and something old in the movie. The something new is that the lead isn't just any other girl. Instead of a little girl, we see an autistic young woman in her 20s preparing to become independent while her widowed mother deals with cancer. I like how the uncle was used as a metaphor for the Grim Reaper. It isn't explicitly stated, but it's implied by the lead, and I thought that was clever. Speaking of the uncle, I read some earlier reviews saying that the supporting characters were great and deserved more screen time. I especially felt this with Tony Hale. It's not just because it's Tony Hale and I wanted more Tony Hale (although, yes, that too). He has this particular spark in his acting—this warmth and sensitivity that can make even a small role feel special. Given the subject matter, I think that gentleness could have added even more emotional weight to the character. I just wanted to see more of his magic.
