Young Martin (John Amplas) is entirely convinced that he is an 84-year-old blood-sucking vampire. Without fangs or mystical powers, Martin injects women with sedatives and drinks their blood through wounds inflicted with razor blades. After moving to Braddock, Penn., to live with his superstitious uncle (Lincoln Maazel), who also believes Martin is a vampire, Martin tries to prey exclusively on criminals and thugs but stumbles when he falls for a housewife (Sara Venable).

What to Know

Critics Consensus

George A. Romero's contribution to vampire lore contains the expected gore and social satire -- but it's also surprisingly thoughtful, and boasts a whopper of a final act.

A film that helped to reinvent and reshape the vampire mythos, Martin is another example of Romero at the top of his game. Go to Full Review

A film that was caught-up in the UK’s Video nasty kerfuffle in the 1980s, Romero often referred to Martin as his favourite film. It may lack the visceral thrills of some of his other work, it’s easy to see why the filmmaker would think so fondly of it. Go to Full Review

Enigmatic and intriguing on many levels... the age-old fascination with vampirism is contrasted with urban angst, and one may be seen directly linked with the other. Go to Full Review

Dave D @DFDeLuca 14h George Romero's best film. See more Vaughn R Sep 28 Tonight we watched this one; 'MARTIN' (1977) A really great take on a vampire film. Brief synopsis; Martin is, or thinks he is, a vampire. No fangs. Loves garlic Immune to crucifixes. But, he has a thirst for blood. Initially he injects unwitting victims with something to make them sleep so they don't suffer and cuts them with a razor to drink. Things become more difficult when he moves in with his cousin who knows he is Nosferatu. Tensions flare. Somehow, Martin is still our hero. We like him. Poor Martin. Made in '78 this is a ground breaking film. We had never seen vampires like this. Great crossover b&w editing to make you feel like you're watching thee original Nosferatu film To his last day, Director George A. Romero says its his favourite film. We loved it. I know others love it. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. See more Nick O @Nicki1985 May 22 Is Martin a real vampire or just a psychopath? Doesn’t really matter either way when the bodies start piling up in Pennsylvania in this rare Romero classic. See more Paul M May 12 This is my new favorite Romero film behind Dawn of the Dead. It’s Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer with a block sucking slant. This is tense and quite disturbing for stretches, much more so than his subsequent releases.  It has to be a top 10 vampire film… in my humble opinion at least. See more Read all reviews
