What to Know

Critics Consensus

Visually polished but narratively derivative and overall muddled, Mute is a would-be sci-fi epic whose title serves as an unfortunate guide to how it might be best enjoyed.

Worth checking out once you've seen Netflix's Annihilation, but before you get into Altered Carbon. Go to Full Review

As a production project it was, apparently, stuck in "development hell" for more than a decade. Sometimes projects are stuck in development hell for a reason. Go to Full Review

Mute disappoints in the worst way, by evoking only bothersome indifference. Go to Full Review

A frustrating, bewildering and nonsensical disappointment that offers little that feels new and fails to craft a mystery that sparks intrigue in a world that feels hazily defined. Go to Full Review

I see it as a positive that films like this can be released and they won't please everyone, but are at least experimental and interesting. I would encourage people to give it a chance, particularly if you have enjoyed modern-day twists on noir. Go to Full Review

Paul S @RT91988760 1d ***SPOILERS*** A slow and incoherent story made this movie a drag to sit through. There were some intriguing moments, and the visual atmosphere of the movie was beautiful, but the more the story dragged on, the more I lost interest. Paul Rudd's character was the best part of the movie for me, even though he turned out to be the bad guy. It's not the worst movie in the world, but I've definitely seen better. See more David H. @rivrocks Mar 30 What a weird little project someone clearly put their heart and soul into. It kinda works for no apparent reason. See more Peter F @RT28007450 Mar 23 Great idea and implementation of creating a cyberpunk Berlin. Something is missing for it to be really great but overall liked it. What I am missing is probably a key arc or point to this movie. Yes I understand the many side-stories. But what is the main story? A detective story? A revenge story? A love story? A story about (the complexity of) madness? It's all in there but none is worked out enough to qualify as THE main focus of the film. Good acting though and decent dialogues, although the characters are acting rather randomly and switching between emotions and dispositions towards other characters at times drastically, for apparently no reason, but that is how it is with Hollywood movies - the need to surprise the viewer in each scene has its price. See more Karen L @Karen70 Dec 18 Don’t believe the reviews. This is a classic with such a good story and strong acting. I’ve watched this several times and it’s always moving and so watchable. Brilliant cast and amazing film! See more Ruksana B @RT33837947 Nov 20 One of the best films I've watched in a long time. Pleasant surprise. I don't understand the bad reviews from the critics. It's clever and had me gripped. Great film, worth watching. See more sarah k @RT30239331 Aug 18 I’m not sure why this got 20%. I have watched this film many times and love it. It’s good to see Paul Rudd play a more complex and gritty character. I’m glad I watched the movie before looking at the reviews. See more Read all reviews
