Steelworker Russell Baze works a dead-end job and holds tight to his sense of family, duty and loyalty. Rodney Baze, Russell's brother, returns home after serving in Iraq and, with his debts piling up, becomes entangled with a vicious crime lord. Soon afterward, Rodney disappears mysteriously. The police fail to solve the case, so Russell -- feeling he has little left to lose -- puts his life on the line to bring his brother home.

Out of the Furnace (2013) is one of those films that leaves a lasting impression because of how heavy and unsettling it feels from start to finish. It’s not "disturbing" in a flashy or horror sense, but in a grounded, realistic way that makes it hit harder than expected. The atmosphere is bleak, the tone is serious throughout, and the performances really sell the emotional weight of the story. What makes it stand out is how unforgiving it feels. The film doesn’t offer easy comfort or clean resolutions, and that sense of consequence and loss hangs over every decision the characters make. It’s a slow burn, but it builds tension in a very natural, almost uncomfortable way. Overall, it’s a well-acted and intense drama that sticks with you long after it ends. Not an easy watch, but a powerful one. 7/10

Surprised it only has a rating slightly above 50%. Definitely not a fast moving film, but it does have a strong cast and some serious emotional depth. I would definitely recommend giving it a go if you haven’t already

This movie was relatable as an older sibling, who is trying to just move through life and settle down, watching their younger sibling slowly self-destruct. This movie covers so much ground, with so many lessons. It does move at a slower pace but if you slow down with it, it seems to fly by. Woody Harrelson and Willam Dafoe are goated as usual. I actually found Christian Bale and Casey Affleck's acting and storylines to be deep and well-detailed, and Zoe Saldana broke my heart over and over again. You should definitely watch it and really study it, it's worth the time
