Joelle M @RT12449978 4d If you appreciate an adaptation that offers a fresh spin, this movie has a lot to offer! The writing is so clever in the way it modernized and brought a comedic angle to the story. I loved the fourth wall breaks and the wittiness and spunk of all the characters. The casting is so great too. Every actor from the stars to the smaller roles did a great job matching the tone. Some standouts to me were Mia McKenna-Bruce, Richard E Grant, and of course Dakota Johnson who had performances filled with lots of great comedic choices. Cosmo Jarvis was so charming as Wentworth. The sets and cinematography were also lovely. All in all, if you're looking for a shot for shot remake of the novel, that is not this film, plus that already exists in other versions! The adaptation is nice because Dakota Johnson does such a great job talking to the camera. Several unique scenes suit the story nicely. It is a visually grounded production that focuses on a woman navigating the sudden return of a past lover, proving that an iconic story can easily get bogged down when it tries too hard to mimic contemporary style. Dakota Johnson is good as Anne Elliot, bringing a charming charisma and unpolished vulnerability to a very difficult role. She delivers the constant fourth wall breaks with a lot of natural warmth, even when the material lets her down. The supporting cast provides decent backing, but the characters feel far too superficial to create any real emotional weight. The writing starts out okay but quickly settles into an uneven, overly quirky storyline that tests your patience instead of building genuine tension.
