JOSHUA K @defmagic Aug 7 *Phone Booth* is incredibly unique, simple, and the kind of rare gem that doesn’t come around often. I’m sure some people go in expecting a huge drama with multiple locations, gunfights, and action scenes, but that’s not what this movie is. It’s psychological, and it does that extremely well. It builds your paranoia alongside the main character’s while exploring questions like: Who has the right to hold someone accountable for their past? And how far is too far? What I love most is how the entire world can see this one man without understanding what he’s actually going through. To everyone else, he just looks like some jerk hogging a payphone. It’s simple, tense, thought-provoking, and really well done. Watch it at least once—preferably with someone who loves discussing movies afterward. Larry Cohen's screenplay gets nearly 90 minutes of suspense from a man trapped in a phone booth, relying on sharp dialogue, escalating tension, and psychological conflict instead of elaborate action. Colin Farrell does an excellent job carrying almost the entire film from one location. His transformation from an arrogant publicist into someone forced to confront his own flaws is superb. Kiefer Sutherland is equally effective, creating a terrifying villain almost entirely through his calm, controlled voice. Joel Schumacher also deserves credit for using inventive camerawork and editing to keep the confined setting visually engaging. A few plot developments ask for more suspension of disbelief than they probably should, particularly the sniper's ability to anticipate nearly everything. Still, the execution is strong enough that those moments are easy to forgive. It movie almost feels Hitchcockian, which makes sense, because I found that the screenwriter actually pitched this plot to Hitchcock back in the day. Colin Farrell is acting his heart out and brings a very believable arc to his character. And while casting Kiefer Sutherland in a real-time action drama right after the first season of 24 ended feels a little on-the-nose, his voice just has the perfect amount of suaveness and menace. Simple script and premise, expertly acted- to note, Farrell pulls this off on a level a lot of great actor's would've struggled with and the emotional elements in the movie rest almost entirely on his performance.
