See more Wayne K Sep 22 Eli Roth’s films are definitely not to everyone’s tastes. Case in point, The Green Inferno. If you love what he does, you’re gonna love this film. If you don’t, then it’s gonna be a long hour and 40 minutes. The film has incredible cinematography, with the most vivid greens and reds you’re likely to see outside of a Dario Argento film. Speaking of Italian directors, Roth clearly idolises the likes of Ruggero Deodato and Umberto Lenzi, as TGI is basically his attempt to make an Amazon cannibal film. Sadly, Roth has used this conceit to essentially do ‘Cabin Fever In the Jungle’. Average acting, bad dialogue and skin-peeling obnoxious characters. The social satire of Holocaust and, to a lesser extent, Ferox is either missing completely or utterly misguided, depending on how you look at it. In Holocaust, it was obvious who the villain was, and the film leant completely into that. Here, the indigenous tribes are either the goodies or the baddies depending on who needs to die or be horribly mutilated. I’ll give the film credit for its intensity and willingness to be gruesome and brutal at the most unexpected moment, and I would definitely recommend it for its sheer balls to the wall insanity, but if you’re looking for something more profound than screaming and dismemberment, you’re better off looking elsewhere. Yes, the gore is insanely realistic, but when that’s the only thing a movie has to offer, it gets old fast. The characters are hollow, the “activism satire” feels lazy, and the tribe is reduced to a stereotype straight out of a 70s exploitation flick. Instead of shocking with meaning, it shocks for the sake of it. If you’re only here for gore, go ahead. If you want substance, look elsewhere.
