Starting a new job can be a difficult challenge, especially if you're already retired. Looking to get back into the game, 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker seizes the opportunity to become a senior intern at an online fashion site. Ben soon becomes popular with his younger co-workers, including Jules Ostin, the boss and founder of the company. Whittaker's charm, wisdom and sense of humor help him develop a special bond and growing friendship with Jules.

The movie does occasionally feel too polished and convenient. Some of its conflicts are resolved almost suspiciously easily, and the workplace environment is probably much more idyllic than reality. But The Intern isn't really interested in realism. It's interested in kindness. And sometimes, that's enough. "You're never wrong to do the right thing." Verdict: A charming, feel-good workplace comedy carried by two excellent performances. The Intern is predictable, wholesome, and maybe a little too sentimental—but sometimes a movie doesn't need to be complicated to be wonderful.

The mushy mood music sets the tone. Most of the humor worked, but some of it flopped badly, especially the madcap "robbery" of the mother’s house to delete an incorrectly sent email, which was more cringe-worthy than funny. Still, it was nice to see an older Robert De Niro in this kind of role, and the movie did offer some pleasant reflection on aging, retirement, usefulness, and how to keep finding purpose after work.
