Critics Consensus

The Last Five Years hits a few awkward notes in its transition from stage to screen, but its freshness and sincere charm -- and well-matched stars -- offer their own rewards.

The unbalanced nature of the adaptation makes for a basically unsatisfying experience (Jamie, a jerk, gets his way with everything, and Cathy, a sweetheart, doesn't), but there are moments of real delight in the movie ... Go to Full Review

LaGravenese doesn't seem to have a particular vision for how to shoot or tell this particular story, so he just aims for the most straightforward method possible most of the time, and that ultimately cripples the film in ways it can't recover from. Go to Full Review

It's a film to bring tears to the eyes of a cynic - in fact, a cynic might relish it more than anyone, since it's the counterpointing of exuberance with unashamed bleakness that makes The Last Five Years so rich. Go to Full Review

Whilst the film version doesn't capture the full magic of the show, it's a close-enough stopgap till the opportunity arises to see it on the stage again. Go to Full Review

The he said/she said construction, played forwards and backwards, negates the possibility of a clear-cut climax. Add to that the non-chemistry between the leads and you have an all-singing-all-dancing musical that falls flat. Go to Full Review

An unpleasant couple sings ridiculously on-the-nose lyrics about the collapse of a romance that we are given no way to sympathize with or understand. Absolute torture. Go to Full Review

@RT90685851 2d It totally sucked. The actors' performances were excellent, but the musical-to-film adaptation was poorly done. It's quite unkind to viewers who aren't familiar with the original. See more Gigi H @RT16531095 Mar 18 Amazing movie beautiful songs and a very emotional story. See more Jessica R @RT77127042 Mar 14 Absolutely phenomenal movie. The music matching the characters feelings and emotions, how we, the viewer watch this horrible man get away with all of his actions and play the victim just because he’s famous and this innocent girl being blamed for their marriages downfall not only because Jamie thinks it’s her fault but because he thinks he’s better than her now. A sad, beautiful movie that really left an impact. Truly one of my all time favourites I cannot recommend this movie more See more Jasleen Kaur S @RT51564433 03/29/2025 Over 10 years later and I still think this is incredibly watchable, Inventive and wonderfully acted. See more Chris O @clowens 03/14/2025 Anna Kendrick ruins this for me. See more 02/13/2025 Based on the hit musical of the same name by Richard LaGravenese starring Anna Kendrick and Supergirl tv star Jeremy Jordan Jamie and Cathy were once a happy couple but as the film starts the relationship is over The story recounts what happened in the last 5 years what exactly led them to break up Did they want different things? Were they polar opposites? Were they not good enough for each other? Any couple would face challenges during their happiness finding something better, something different, choosing for ourselves to know what exactly we want Kendrick is sensational and it helps she has terrific vocals given her success from Pitch Perfect There’s even a funny visual gag referencing Sound of Music There’s a lot of singing in this mind you every 5 minutes so it’s impossible to take a breather The players are good it’s just that it’s hard to feel any emotion from either of them This musical maybe has its share of fans but it needed to stand out more See more Read all reviews
